GOOGLE'S NEW SMS VERIFICATION AND SPAM PROTECTION
28/12/2019

We receive dozens of text messages on our phones daily. Some maybe the messages from your service providers stating their latest offers, some may be from your banks regarding your latest deposit or withdrawal or it can be even the messages from online shopping websites. These messages can also be sent by Fraudulent companies disguising as genuine companies. Sometimes we receive messages containing clickbait links and there is a chance that these links can potentially identify your bank details and other private information by clicking on it. People who are not aware of this might fall into these kinds of traps. That is why Google has rolled out a new SMS verification and Spam Protection feature that helps your phone verify the authenticity of the message you receive.

SMS Verification and Spam Protection

Sometimes you get messages from your bank asking you to disclose your pin. We should know that no bank will ever ask your pin. These messages are sent by fake companies masqueraded as your banks. This is called Phishing. The main purpose of Google SMS verification is to tackle phishing. Messages are incumbent for a business to develop their relationship with their customers but when there are things like phishing, both business and customers are adversely affected. Google has rolled out SMS verification features in many countries including India. With this feature, whenever you receive a message from an unknown number Google will verify the number. If it is a genuine company, then the identity of the company and their badge or logo will be displayed in the message thread. Google has said that some companies like 1-800-Flowers, Banco Bradesco, Kayak, Payback, and SoFi have started messaging on this platform. It is also said that more companies are enrolling in verified SMS system.

Spam Protection

Spam Protection is already seen on some phones. The spam messages with malicious website links you receive will not be moved to trash, rather Google will give you a warning by showing a red exclamation mark along with an option for you to confirm it is a spam. With the user's confirmation, Google can block those messages in the future and can fine-tune and enhance the efficiency of the Spam detection system.

How This Works

The verified SMS system lets you understand the genuine identity of the sender to help you dodge phishing. This can be turned on in your messages setting. In between the time you receive the message and the verification there is a sequential process that leads to the verification. When a business messages you, the message is translated into an unreadable authenticity code by Google on your phone. This code is compared with the unreadable authenticity code sent by the business to Google. The information like the logo of the business and verified icon is displayed in your message thread if both the codes match. Thus the messages are verified.

How Your Messages Are Protected

Your messages are protected. The messages you receive are verified. If you are concerned about privacy, then do no worry. The messages you send or receive are completely safeguarded, so it will not be read by Google or any others. The message content is not revealed when Google verifies a message by the authenticity code- a cryptographic technique. The business uses a public key for the phone, a generated private key and the intended message content, to generate the unique unreadable code for everyone including you, the message and the business. When you receive a message, the messaging app cross-checks whether the business is enlisted in registered businesses. If they are, the public key for business is retrieved by the messaging app and it uses the public key and private key to create an authenticity code of message which is later sent to Google. The message is said to be genuine if Google finds the code of the message and code of the business matches. In precise, it is the codes that are cross-checked not the message content. Moreover, the code cannot be decoded by someone who reads they will require your key or business private key.

It is sad when technology gets misused for fraudulence. However, with the SMS Verification and Spam Protection by Google, we can defend ourselves from phishing. Make sure the data is turned on while verification otherwise the verification cannot be done. Also, see that the 'Verified SMS' is turned on in your messages settings. This feature is available in only new phones. If your handset does not have this feature, you can get a new phone, that possesses Google SMS Verification and Spam Protection, from myG. You can even exchange your phone for a new one at the best price through myG exchange.

TIPS TO FREE UP STORAGE IN A SMARTPHONE
26/12/2019

Technology is dominating the world and the companies are utilizing it to manufacture extraordinary Smartphones. High-tech cameras, Chipset with rapid processing speed, etc are comprised of a Smartphone. The photos we take, the applications we use, the games we play and a lot more need a hefty chunk of storage space. Let the phone be of any capacity, after some period of usage we often get a notification stating, the storage is running out of space and we won't be having any clue how our phone is in devoid of sufficient storage. Mostly it is the piled up cache files or junk files that occupy a big percent of the storage space without our comprehension. However, there are numerous ways to tackle this issue. Let us see the ways to free up the storage in our Smartphone.

Use an SD Card

Dedicated SD card slots are not seen much in the latest Smartphones. Albeit, some phones come with a dedicated slot or hybrid slot in which you can insert either a sim card or an SD card. SD cards get handy while your internal storage space is swallowed by Applications or files. Some phones with the older version of Android, have a provision to move certain applications to SD Card by going to the Settings > Application manager > Select the App > Move to SD Card. There is one more way. You can specifically move your files, Photos, and Videos to the SD cards. Do not buy an SD card based on its price. Make sure you buy a good SD card of Class 10 with a good read and write speed. If you are looking for one, check out the MyG Website. You can get genuine SD cards and get it delivered the same day itself.

Turn-Off WhatsApp Auto-Downloads

WhatsApp is a widely used messenger and we get tons of messages, photos, and videos daily. Whatsapp has a big hand in eating up the storage. Sometimes without even selecting the download option, the media files get downloaded and without our knowledge, it will be stored in our Gallery. This is because the Auto-Download option is turned on in your Whatsapp settings. To turn it off open WhatsApp > Go to the Setting > Select Data and Storage Usage > Select 'When using Mobile Data' > Uncheck Photos, Audio, Videos, Documents. Do the same in 'When connected to WiFi' option. Now, to an extent, your device will not come across storage issues.

Use USB OTG

Thanks to the technology, most of the phones can be connected to a Pendrive or External Hard disk using OTG cable. Just like moving data to the SD card, you can move your data to a Pendrive or Hard disk. Make sure your phone has OTG compatibility. Plug it via OTG Cable and a new drive other than internal storage or SD card will pop up in your file manager, Move your files to that drive. If you require OTG cable, Pendrive or Hard drives, just check out the genuine products offered by myG on their website.

Delete Duplicate Files

Android has a separate option for duplicate files in storage settings that makes it easy for us to delete it. Just go to storage setting > Select Clean Up > Select Duplicate Files > Delete the files. If you do not have that option then you have to cherry-pick and delete the duplicate files.

Use Cloud Storage

Most of us are not aware of cloud storage facilities and some of us never use it. Cloud storage is an online storage facility to be precise and Google drive is one example. Google drive is an inbuilt application that helps you store your data on their servers. An internet connection is necessary to access Google Drive or retrieve data from it. If you want to store your photos or videos then select the photos and press the share button, then a list of applications will pop up, there you can see Google drive application. Just select Google drive and set the location in the drive. Within minutes everything will be copied to your cloud storage. Or else you can store files directly from Google Drive. Open Google Drive > Select the plus button > Select Upload and select the files you need to store on Cloud. The copying process will be done within minutes. However, to retrieve the data you are required to download from Google Drive. Google Drive lets you store a maximum of 15gb data. There are other cloud storage applications available in Google Play Store like Amazon Drive, Dropbox, Box, MEGA, Nextcloud, etc.

Reduce Photo Resolution

The modern Smartphone cameras furnish us with high-quality pictures and their size is big. So, if we keep on clicking high-quality pictures that will take up a good amount of your storage. However, there is an option to reduce the resolution of the images in the camera settings. Hence, the storage issue is tackled. Note that, the clarity will drop if you reduce the resolution

Clear Cache Files

A cache file is a file created by the applications you use, to reduce the loading time when you open the application. For instance, When you open Whatsapp, the cache files are created in the background. The next time you open Whatsapp it is loaded faster. That is precisely the use of cache files. These files get accumulated whenever we open applications and get piled up, ergo consuming the storage. By deleting this, you can get gigabytes at times and there is no harm in doing so. To delete it, follow this step: Setting > Apps > Select the app you want > Clear Cache. In some phones, there is an option to clear the total cache files, otherwise mentioned as Junk Files, in the storage setting of your phone.

These ways will free up storage in your Smartphone. However, whenever you buy a phone keep in mind about the storage. The storage capacity of a phone matters a lot if you are planning to use it for a long period. If you are intending to buy a phone with decent storage capacity, check out the myG website where you can see a wide range of Smartphones, and accessories that help relieve the space like SD cards, OTG cables, Hard disks, USB drives, etc.

Now, let's get into the highlighted features of Redmi K30.

Side Mounted Fingerprint Scanner

In the latest versions of MIUI 11, a new method called “isBroadSideFingerprint” has been added that returns true if the device’s code-name matches either “phoenix” or “Picasso.” At the current moment, we are not much aware of “Picasso”. In any case, the string that follows this code tells us that “BroadSide” refers to the right side of the device: “Fingerprint sensor is located on the right edge of your device.”
Apart from all these, the graphic titled “core_scan_gesture_broadside” delivers a generic smartphone with dual hole-punch front cameras and a right-side-mounted fingerprint scanner which is great news and will be a new experience for the users.
Xiaomi Redmi has already announced that the all-new K30 holds a dual hole-punch design and it's assumed to be made with the likeness of the Redmi K30 in mind. You can still expect at least two of the smartphones from the Xiaomi brand that holds dual hole-punch designs and side-mounted fingerprint scanners.

120Hz Display Refresh Rate

It's discovered that the Xiaomi is working on a 120Hz display smartphone. This is purely based on a hidden setting that is found for changing the refresh rate from 60Hz to 120Hz. It didn't work to force this setting to show up as the Xiaomi device has a high refresh rate display.
We know that the Xiaomi device comes with such a display and the device code-named “phoenix.” A method called “isSuppotHighFrameRate” returns true if the device code-name matches “phoenix.” The refresh rate setting switch between 60Hz and 120Hz, that the Redmi K30 comes with a display with 120Hz refresh rate support.

Sony IMX686 Image Sensor

Sony has already posted a teaser on its Weibo page about its upcoming IMX686 image sensor. Weibo is a Chinese social media site and all where curious why Sony shared such a piece of news in Weibo. But now we have good news that the upcoming Redmi K30 from Xiaomi's family is the first smartphone device with the IMX686 and Sony is teasing the sensor ahead of the smartphone’s upcoming launch soon in China.
Much details are not disclosed about IMX 686 and the only thing we know is that it’s supposed to be a 60MP image sensor.
The evidence we found for “phoenix” having Sony’s IMX686 comes from a Qualcomm camera library. Below listed are the strings within the library:
“phoenix_imx686,” “phoenix_s5k3t2,” “phoenix_gc02m1_depth,” and “phoenix_gc02m1_front.”

All Features at a Glance

Redmi K30 is tipped to feature a 6.66-inch full-HD display with a 20:9 aspect ratio and 120Hz refresh rate. Covered with a layer of Gorilla Glass 5, the K30's display is well protected. Featuring a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for authentication, this will be a great new experience for the users. Along with all these, Redmi K30 also holds NFC, an IR blaster, 3.5mm headphone jack to handle the connectivity suite, and a 4,500mAh battery with 27W fast charging support.

Internally packed with Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G SoC along with SoC paired with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, Redmi K30 delivers better performance. The 6GB + 64GB configuration is expected to be priced at roughly Rs. 20,000 and Xiaomi are expected to launch more variants as well.

The camera part holds a quad rear camera setup which includes a 64-megapixel main snapper, assisted by a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle shooter, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 2-megapixel camera as well. Afterall, K30 runs in Android 10 with MIUI 11 custom skin on top.
